By presidential proclamation, March is designated as Women's History Month each year. The month has been set aside to recognize the contributions of women in American history.

But how was the Women`s History Month came to be recognized?

International Women's Day, in America, was founded to recognize female textile workers' labor rights and was initially marked with demonstrations in major cities like Chicago and New York. According to Carol Rosenblatt of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, many of those who marched for working rights were young immigrants from Europe seeking better chances in the United States.
However, at the time, the holiday appeared to be overlooked due to the ties to the American labor movement and the Socialist Party.

Women`s Day in Europe

The International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen in 1910 was the first to establish International Women's Day. Clara Zetkin, a German feminist activist and Marxist theorist, was the one who proposed the notion.
The Soviet Union become the first to declare it a public holiday in 1917. In 1921, the date of March 8th was accepted universally.
In America, in 1987, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as "Women's History Month," thus Presidents continued to announce a National Women's History Week in March.
Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed more resolutions seeking and authorizing the President to declare March as Women's History Month each year. Since 1995, each president has declared March to be "Women's History Month" with an annual proclamation.
